Oral hygiene with orthodontic braces

Oral hygiene in the first days of wearing orthodontic braces may pose challenges. Having the right accessories will certainly help take care of the teeth, braces, and ensure fresh breath. We can distinguish two types of orthodontic braces – fixed and removable. Regardless of the type of braces worn, it is important to maintain proper oral hygiene.
ACCESSORIES USED DURING TOOTH BRUSHING
An orthodontist undertaking teeth treatment with braces should explain in detail how to care for the teeth. The basic set for hygiene should include five elements:
- toothbrush with an inner groove that allows for easy cleaning of the braces,
- pointed toothbrush for reaching difficult-to-access interdental spaces – dental floss can also be used,
- interdental brushes to help clean the braces and the space between the orthodontic wire and the tooth,
- toothpaste, any with fluoride will be suitable,
- mouthwash.
HOW TO PROPERLY CLEAN TEETH – STEP BY STEP
Step 1: Use an interdental brush to clean larger spaces between teeth and orthodontic elements.
Step 2: Use a pointed toothbrush or dental floss to reach the smallest spaces between teeth.
Step 3: Clean the surface of the teeth with an orthodontic brush with a groove, focusing on the areas where the orthodontic appliance is applied.
Step 4: Rinse the oral cavity with mouthwash. This helps prevent the buildup of plaque and the occurrence of cavities. Mouthwash also contributes to fresh breath.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF INADEQUATE HYGIENE DURING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?
Lack of proper oral hygiene or inadequate cleaning of teeth with orthodontic appliances can result in prolonged treatment, discoloration of teeth, damage to soft tissues, gum redness, and the development of inflammation.
