Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is performed on patients with bone atrophy who are planning to have dental implants placed. Other indications for this procedure include periodontal disease or gum pockets. Bone grafting is a surgical procedure in which the dentist places bone substitute material in the reconstructed area and covers it with a special barrier membrane. This barrier membrane protects the regenerating area from the ingrowth of soft tissues. After a few months, the bone substitute material undergoes remodeling into the patient’s own fully functional bone, in which dental implants can be safely placed.
