Cold sore – can I come for a visit?

Cold sore is a viral infection caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) from the Herpes group, which also includes viruses like shingles or chickenpox. Cold sores typically appear on the mucous membranes of the oral cavity or on the skin around the lips. They can also occur on the nasal petals. Unfortunately, the initial symptoms can be uncomfortable – on one hand, cold sore lesions are often aesthetically unappealing, and on the other, they can cause discomfort due to the presence of an unusual sore.

HOW DOES INFECTION HAPPEN?

The HSV virus is transmitted through droplets. Simply drinking from the same glass, using the same lip balm, or kissing can lead to the virus finding its way into our bodies. It’s important to remember that once the virus is in the infected individual’s body, it remains there forever. In most cases, it stays dormant, not causing any external symptoms.

STAGES OF COLD SORE DEVELOPMENT

Cold sores typically appear right after experiencing specific tingling and itching sensations. The next stage involves swelling and redness at the affected area. The affected area becomes covered with fluid-filled blisters. Once the blisters rupture, the accumulated fluid inside them is released externally, posing a risk for both ourselves and others in terms of virus transmission. Only after the blisters burst does the sore start to heal.
