Diastema – a reason for pride and complexes

“Diastema” is the term used to describe the gap between the upper central incisors. Besides the aesthetic aspect, it’s also a dental problem. It can cause bite misalignment, periodontal diseases, gum problems, and lisping. Diastema may result from a lack of teeth in the oral cavity, absence of lateral incisors causing a gap, as well as the presence of an additional misaligned tooth between the upper and lower incisors. It can also be a result of an anatomical anomaly in the frenulum attachment.

HOW TO DEAL WITH DIASTEMA?

The fastest and least burdensome way to mask a diastema is through aesthetic composite restoration. After etching the tooth with demineralizing acid, a composite material is applied to widen its surface. The procedure is reversible and short.

Another method is veneers, which are usually porcelain shells attached to the teeth to increase their size. They have the natural color of the tooth, do not discolor, and are durable and long-lasting.

An effective but time-consuming and patient-dependent method of treating diastema is orthodontic braces. They must be properly selected by an orthodontist, accepted by the patient, and worn for an appropriate duration.

DEFECT OR DISTINCTIVE FEATURE?

People have different attitudes towards diastema. Some love them and consider them very attractive, while others have a negative attitude towards them. In some cases, diastema is a malocclusion that needs to be treated. When it’s just an imperfection, removing it is a matter of the patient’s choice, not a necessity. However, when we are not fond of diastema, we can easily and effectively get rid of this defect with veneers or bonding.
